Thymosin Alpha-1
Peptide Name: Thymosin Alpha 1
CAS Number: 62304-98-7
General Overview
Thymosin Alpha 1 is a potent 28-amino acid peptide naturally occurring in the thymus gland. It is a critical pleiotropic hormone responsible for the restoration of immune homeostasis. Research into its synthetic form, often referred to as Thymalfasin, focuses on its ability to act as a biological response modifier. Unlike immunosuppressants, T$\alpha$1 is studied for its dual-action capability: it can stimulate an underactive immune system to fight infections or cancer, while simultaneously modulating an overactive immune response to prevent tissue damage from excessive inflammation.
Researched Benefits
T-Cell Differentiation: Studies indicate that T$\alpha$1 significantly increases the production and maturation of T-lymphocytes, specifically improving the CD4+/CD8+ ratio in immunocompromised models.
Pathogen Neutralization: Extensively researched for its efficacy against chronic viral infections such as Hepatitis B and C, as well as its role in mitigating severe symptoms of respiratory viruses.
Anti-Tumor Activity: Research suggests it enhances the expression of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class I molecules on tumor cells, making them more "visible" to the immune system.
Reduction of Cytokine Storms: In trials involving acute inflammation and sepsis, T$\alpha$1 has shown a capacity to inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-$\alpha$.
Neuroprotection and Anti-Aging: Emerging research in 2026 explores its potential to counteract "immunosenescence"—the natural decline of the immune system due to age-related thymic involution.
