DESCRIPTION
MOTS-c (Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded by the mitochondrial genome rather than the nuclear genome. It functions as a "mitokine" or retrograde signaling molecule that communicates between the mitochondria and the nucleus to regulate metabolic adaptation. Originally discovered in 2015, research has focused on its ability to translocate to the nucleus under metabolic stress to activate gene expression related to antioxidant responses and energy metabolism. It is widely studied for its potential to mimic the beneficial effects of exercise on a cellular level, making it a primary candidate for research into metabolic disorders and age-related physiological decline.
Metabolic Regulation: Research indicates it activates the AMPK pathway, which is the body's master metabolic switch for energy production and fat burning.
Insulin Sensitivity: Studies show that MOTS-c can significantly improve glucose handling and reduce insulin resistance in high-fat diet models.
Physical Performance: Data suggests exogenous administration can enhance running capacity and motor coordination by increasing mitochondrial efficiency in skeletal muscle.
Anti-Aging Potential: Investigations have observed that systemic MOTS-c levels naturally decline with age, and restoring these levels may counteract age-dependent metabolic dysfunction.
